TSUNAMI

Tidal waves called tsunamis are caused by earthquakes with vertical movement that create water displacement.

Prediction

It is difficult to predict a tsunami from the behaviour of waves at sea, since tsunami waves might travel a long way at a height of no more than 3ft (1m) and therefore pass by ships unnoticed. When they reach land they can be about 50ft (15m) high. Japan’s worst tsunami involved a wave 80ft (24m) high.

Tsunami alerts are issued on the basis of earthquake reports. Although this system can work well for places that are far enough away from the earthquake, it is often the case that the tsunami will have struck before the warning can be given.

Keep in touch with earthquake warnings, and beware any unusual rumblings.

Preparation

Plan an escape route to an inland location that is above the likely height of any approaching wave. Put together an emergency kit with food and first aid.

Action

• Do not head towards the beach to check if you can see a wave approaching. If you can see it, it is too late to escape.

• A series of waves may be involved. Do not return to the danger area until there is a complete all-clear.
